Exterior Decoration: The reverse of the coin depicts the great St. George standing tall with his lance, probably after killing the dragon. The coin is designed to match the original “Saint George” painting by Carlo Crivelli, located in the Italian Metropolitan Museum. The obverse of the coin features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the inscriptions: “ELIZABETH II” – the name of the Queen, “NIUE” – the issue country and “5 DOLLARS” – the face value and “2014” – the year of issue.

This coin from the World Heritage series is in the format used by a tranche of earlier coins released, concave and rectangular. Like those coins, this is struck for JVP Investment Coins by the Swiss mint, PAMP.

As before, the coin is 0.999 silver, and gilded and selectively coloured, but this time hitting two-ounces in weight, and taller and narrower. The obverse and smooth rim are also gilded, with the rim carrying an inscribed serial number. The packaging equals the high standards previously set and art fans will likely love this one. It certainly makes a change to see some of the less well known artists and their works celebrated in such style, and combined with the tiny 999 mintage we can’t see these being around too long. We understand this type of coin is quite popular in Russia, and the number of similar coins that JVP have released featuring Icon art would seem to bear that out. If you want one, expect to pay in the $300-$350 range, and the coin is available now.

The subject of the coin was originally painted by Venetian artist Carlo Crivelli in 1472, a contemporary of Giovanni Bellini and noted for his meticulous attention to detail. Commissioned by the Franciscans and Dominicans of Ascoli, Crivelli’s work is exclusively religious in nature. His paintings consist largely of Madonna and Child images, Pietà, and the by-then-old-fashioned altarpiece known as the polyptych. Often filled with images of suffering, such as gaping wounds in Christ’s hands and side and the mouths of mourners twisted in agony, Crivelli’s work appropriately fulfills the spiritual needs of his patrons.
